Since 2017 Julian Balme has been designing and editing the quarterly magazine of the Sunbeam Tiger Club. Within a year of his stewardship the title was awarded ‘Most improved club magazine’ at the annual Classic Car Awards at the NEC.
RALLY MAPS
For a number of years we have designed and produced a bespoke route map, applied to the rear wings of the Porsche 911 campaigned by Gavin and Diana Henderson, for various rallies all around the globe. Very much in the tradition of rallying liveries of the past, the graphics show the various towns and cities that the adventure passes through. With the completion of each epic trip, smaller, less detailed decals have been placed on the roof to serve as a record of what the team has achieved.
THE FISKENS PROJECT
This charming and sought after book, produced by Vegas Design, is a collection of images masterminded by photographer Nick Clements and art director Julian Balme created over a number of years to promote classic car brokers, Fiskens. All the images are period re-enactments that celebrate the glamorous age of motoring with stunning models, fashion and an incredible array of cars, from vintage Bentleys to Le Mans prototypes. A limited number are still available to buy at a RRP £15.99 + P&P. To order email jules@vegasdesign.co.uk
IAN WALKER BOOK
Having interviewed Ian for Classic & Sports Car magazine, Balme was approached by the Walker family to write the 50s driver and 60s racing team owner’s biography. He ended up designing the book as well, the results of which were praised throughout the old car world. One reviewer claimed “… a tour de force of production from designer and writer Julian Balme - one of the best motoring books of the year.” And Octane magazine claimed it “as good to read as it is to look at.” Copies are still available. IS SAITCH YER DADDY? NATIONAL FOOTBALL MUSEUM, MANCHESTER
We recently curated an exhibition for long time collaborator, Kosmo Vinyl and his football inspired collages that documented the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter living over 3,000 miles away in New York. A selection of 40 images were hung in the main foyer for 4 months using the museum’s existing display panels, but re-imagined by Vinyl and Vegas to create a very popular attraction.
IAN DURY: More Than Fair Exhibition
Together with comrade Kosmo Vinyl and daughter, Jemima Dury, Balme co-curated the first exhibition of the much-loved late rock star, and former painter’s, early artwork at the Royal College of Art where he studied. Pieces covering the period from 1961 to 1972 were hung and lit by a team put together and over-seen by Balme who also designed the associated graphics including a foldout poster containing interview’s with Ian’s former mentor Sir Peter Blake and good chum Humphrey Ocean.
KAR KRAFTS COLLABORATION
Vegas Design assisted in the custom car and art show put together by father and son, Mick and Dean Micetich at Studio Voltaire, Clapham supplying artworks and promotional graphics for the week long show.
DEMONS, YARNS & TALES AT THE DAIRY
When the Rug Company teamed up with Riflemaker to stage this ground breaking exhibition, Vegas were called in to oversee the show’s design and presentation. Apart from the usual associated graphics - invites and signage - we designed free standing units to house and light the 14 tapestries created by the likes of Kara Walker and Grayson Perry. The exhibition was also staged in Miami where they decorated the building with graphics created by Vegas Design.
THE LONDON CONCOURS
A longtime classic car enthusiast, Balme was recently chosen to exhibit his collection at the prestigious concours event in the City of London. With the help of friends and colleagues at Classic & Sports Car magazine he managed to assemble 8 vehicles from his stable for the class known as ‘The Collector’.
